Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, May 10, 2021 — In 1931, Howard Harlan started a company to deliver high-quality research models to the scientific community. Over the next nine decades, several strategic acquisitions, expansions, and partnerships brought forth our new name in 2015: Envigo, which combines elements of the words enhance, enrich, and vigorous, with its Latin root of "vita," meaning life.

What does this milestone mean to our customers and their critical R&D projects now that we are the largest organization solely dedicated to providing research models and related services? We spoke to a few Envigo leaders who shared their thoughts on our mission to work together to build a healthier and safer world.

Dr Adrian Hardy, President and CEO of Envigo, commented:
“As a leader in our industry, we understand our responsibility to deliver consistent, reliable research data to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, government, academia, and other life science organizations. These organizations rely on our partnership to provide research models and high-quality support services so they can realize the full potential of their research and development projects. Their projects can ultimately help improve lives around the world, which is why I'm very proud of our rich history over the last 90 years.

Celebrating our contributions to scientific research

Dr Hardy has been with Envigo since 2002, and he isn't the only employee who has a long history with the company. Helmut Ehall, DVM, PhD, Senior Vice President, Veterinary Sciences, has been with Envigo since 2006 and is passionate about providing better animal welfare that results in better science.

Dr Helmut Ehall, Senior Vice President, Veterinary Sciences of Envigo, added:
“I love learning from customers and being part of this bigger picture of creating a healthier and better world. Hearing our animals have participated in studies that led to some breakthrough in medicine. You know that you've been part of that, and you've made sure that the animals are well looked after during this process. That really drives me. That makes it, for me, so much more important.”

Jennie Nelson, who has been part of Envigo since 1998, fell in love with her job after wanting to advance oncology research and honor the memory of her mother who passed away from cancer.

Jennie Nelson, Production Manager of Envigo, added:
“I love that we create potential for positive change. Even if you're just cleaning a cage or putting a box together for a customer, that animal could be the next cure for cancer, heart disease, or COVID-19. There is something valuable in what we do every single day, no matter what it is.”

Looking ahead to our future

Over the next 10 years, our global team of 1,200 employees will continue to bring their diverse experience and expertise to help optimize customers' research programs. We will continue to help deliver answers to important research questions and work toward addressing today's most difficult healthcare challenges. We are honored to have 90 years of history bolstering our efforts and look forward to our ongoing work to support customers at every stage of their journey.
